FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TORONTO, ONTARIO, September 21, 2023 — A group of leading organizations across Canada have officially launched WIN-VC Canada (Women and Nonbinary Impact Network for Venture Capital), an initiative that aims to empower women and non-binary entrepreneurs and integrate a gender lens into the strategies of private investors.

Jointly led by Social Venture Connexion (SVX) and several impact-aligned organizations. SVX received funding for the project through the Inclusive Women Venture Capital Initiative, one of the pillars of the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES), a Government of Canada initiative that encompasses nearly $7 billion in investments and commitments that are helping thousands of women entrepreneurs start up, scale up, and expand into new markets.

To fuel this vision of a more inclusive venture capital environment for Canadian women and non-binary individuals, the following impact-aligned organizations joined together to establish WIN-VC Canada: Canadian Women’s Foundation, Esplanade Quebec, New Power Labs, Pillar Nonprofit Network, Pond Deshpande Centre, Spring Activator, SVX, and WeBC. These organizations possess extensive experience, expertise, and resources to deliver top-tier programs for enterprises and investors, enhance sector knowledge and drive systemic change, and mobilize capital to advance gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.

WIN-VC’s mission will serve women and non-binary entrepreneurs, including Indigenous, rural, BIPOC, newcomer, LGBTQ2+, Two-Spirit, and women with disabilities. The Network will also support investors of all genders interested in gender-lens investing, systems change, and inclusivity, with a focus on sectors including food, agriculture, real estate, cleantech, and healthcare.

The Network will offer multi-regional and regional entrepreneur accelerator programs, alongside regional and multi-regional investor education programs. WIN-VC’s programming will be intentionally designed to prioritize equity-deserving groups and will provide support to a range of entities in accessing capital. The Network will also provide education services to empower investors, particularly those in the angel and venture capital realms, with practical knowledge pertaining to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Additionally, the Network’s entrepreneur programming will aim to boost investment-readiness amongst women and non-binary entrepreneurs through one-on-one advisory support, coaching, and peer-to-peer learning. WIN-VC will dedicate national research efforts to gender-lens investing and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) to inform the Network’s knowledge products and professional development opportunities, ensuring the necessary information to promote diversity within entrepreneurial and investment ecosystems.

The project’s outcome is poised to create lasting positive system change including enhanced access to capital for women entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses, enabling them to establish, sustain, or expand their enterprises while gaining awareness of available support resources. Moreover, women entrepreneurs will enhance their investment readiness, bolstering their ability to tap into diverse capital sources through increased knowledge of capital sources and investment readiness capacity.

The skills and knowledge acquired through WIN-VC’s programs, coupled with improved access to capital, will create sustainability and increased participation in entrepreneurship and the Canadian economy, generating greater participation of women entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses in the Canadian entrepreneurial landscape.

To mark its launch, WIN-VC kicked off with an event showcasing the Network’s upcoming programming as well as a mixed-panel discussion highlighting insights from entrepreneurs and gender-lens investors.
