In April 2021, the federal government released its budget and featured landmark commitments to Canada's social innovation and social finance sector. We’ve written before about the federal budget and have been discussing it with our peers in the field, including sharing our thoughts with Future of Good.

On May 21, 2021, SVX, the Centre for Social Innovation, Upper Canada Equity Fund, Pillar Nonprofit Network, and 10C and Harvest Impact Fund, sent the following letter to the Hon. Ahmed D. Hussen. …

The Carolinian Canada Conservation Impact Bond (CIB) is an ambitious social finance initiative harnessing a combination of impact investment and philanthropic grants to finance positive landscape renewals and improvements in the Carolinian Zone of Southern Ontario. The two-phase initiative seeks to improve a combined 1,000 acres of habitat in this ecologically significant region of Ontario, protecting the region’s fragile biodiversity and freshwater reserves. In this blog series, we are highlighting the Carolinian CIB, the development of its phase two bond, and results from a community design session in May. …

“It is not more bigness that should be our goal. We must attempt, rather, to bring people back to the warmth of community, to the worth of individual effort and responsibility, and of individuals working together as a community, to better their lives and their children’s future” — Robert F. Kennedy

As communities consider how to rebuild their local economies in a post-COVID era, it is critical to ensure that our investments generate community value in addition to financial value. SVX has written extensively on the need to catalyze community investment to build more resilient and equitable communities across Ontario…

Stretching from Toronto to Windsor, the Carolinian Zone is the most fragile and diverse ecosystem in Canada with the least habitat, for the most biodiversity, with the highest population density in the nation. Extreme weather events and 85 per cent habitat loss create urgency for protecting wildlife, water and a way of life.

Carolinian Canada’s Conservation Impact Bond (CIB) is a place-based and multi-regional initiative to rehabilitate 1,000 hectares of land and to bolster social, environmental and economic benefits in southern Ontario. In this blog series, we are highlighting the Carolinian CIB, the development of its phase two bond, and…

Today’s federal budget featured significant investments and opportunities for social finance, social enterprise and social innovation in Canada. We wanted to break down some of the key announcements and the implications for the field.

There has been robust and coordinated action over the past year (and much prior) to advance many of these investments and policy changes. We want to recognize these milestones as the achievement of a wide spectrum of stakeholders, while also recognizing that we still have a long journey ahead to achieve the change we seek.

There are certainly many more in the Harry Potter and the…

Something fundamental has shifted. As a society we have collectively understood a harsh reality: our current profit-centric systems allow for the pervasive and systemic continuation of inequities. The pandemic sped up our desire for a new modus operandi for society, one that intentionally centres on people and planet alongside economic growth.

Notably, there is enormous interest and opportunity for a transition towards impact investing in Latin America. After having conducted a similar engagement in Colombia and supported by the Government of Canada, four partner organizations including Deetken Impact, SVX Canada, SVX Mexico, and Impacto have combined forces to work on…
